GIVING SKIN A SECOND CHANCE

Time, sun exposure and other environmental factors take a severe toll on your skin over time. While many influences that cause progressive aging may not show up immediately, when they do, the changes to your appearance can be distressing and lead to self-consciousness about your appearance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could turn back time and return to the period where your skin still boasted its youthful vitality? While there is no way to go back to the past, you can help restore your skin’s previous health and appearance through an innovative laser treatment known as Contour TRL.

WHAT DOES THE CONTOUR TRL TREAT?

While Contour TRL is primarily used to treat the face, it can also be used to address other areas of the body where damage has occurred to the skin. This procedure is appropriate for all types of skin.

Contour TRL can address a broad range of skin concerns:

  • Fine lines and deeper wrinkles
  • Shallow scarring left behind by acne and chicken pox
  • Unsightly post-operative scars
  • Brown spots and other pigmented lesions, such as melasma
  • Actinic keratosis
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Skin tone that has lost its youthful luster
  • Early signs of skin laxity

THE LOWDOWN ON LASERS

Laser devices have been used by the cosmetic industry for decades, to produce a broad range of outcomes for patients that were not interested in or ready for surgery. Two basic types of laser offer different degrees of correction, depending on the needs of each patient:

Ablative lasers remove the outer dermal layers to reveal firmer, more youthful skin underneath. The treatment might also be referred to as a laser peel because it works similarly to a chemical peel. While these procedures usually involve anesthesia and a recovery period, the results are extensive and long-lasting after just a single treatment session.

Non-ablative lasers stimulate the body to regenerate skin cells without damaging the outer dermis or internal tissue. Although you can have this procedure during a lunch hour and return to activities right away, results will be more subtle. In addition, you may require more than one treatment session to achieve full results and regular touch-up sessions after that to maintain them.

Contour TRL falls into the former category of ablative laser treatments. The TRL in the name stands for “tunable resurfacing laser,” which means the procedure can be tailored or “tuned” to the precise depth you need to achieve your full cosmetic goals. Deeper treatments require more downtime and create more dramatic results, while superficial treatments offer positive results with topical numbing and without a lengthy recovery process.

THE LASER BEHIND THE CONTOUR TRL

The Contour TRL features the Erbium YAG laser with an adjustable depth that allows us to modify your treatment to the precise amount of correction you need. One advantage the YAG laser offers over CO2 lasers is the ability of the device to produce positive changes to the skin using a lower level of heat. Less heat makes the YAG a safe and effective choice for more skin types with a lower risk of pigmentation irregularities after treatment. The tunable control further enhances the safety and efficacy of the device, since you will only receive as much ablation as needed to correct your skin issues – no more, no less.

A TREATMENT OVERVIEW

Depending on the depth of your ablation, you will either receive topical numbing or a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during your procedure. Sedation may also be offered with the local anesthesia for deep treatments. A handpiece is run across the surface of the skin in the treatment area, delivering the precise amount of laser energy needed to produce your full results. Procedures may take just a few minutes or up to 30 minutes to complete, depending on how large your treatment area is and whether multiple areas will be treated at one time.

RECOVERY TIME

After your Contour TRL procedure, your skin will likely be red and tender for a few days, and some patients experience mild swelling as well. You will be given an ointment to apply to the skin to assist with the healing process. It is essential that you keep skin out of the sun for many days since it will be extremely vulnerable to damage during the recovery process. The duration of your recovery will depend on the depth of your treatment. Lighter treatments require about three to four days of downtime, while deep treatments may need seven to 10 days.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM YOUR RESULTS

You will see your preliminary results after your skin heals completely from your treatment. Your complexion should be smoother and firmer, with a visible reduction in brown spots, wrinkles and shallow scars. Your results will continue to improve in the weeks and months following your procedure, especially if you had a deeper treatment, as the laser energy stimulates the body’s collagen production for a naturally youthful appearance.
